Show and Tell

Instructions have been given for MORE SHOW- LESS TELL!! Thanks though to all who have expressed concern, but we're currently in play-it-down mode.

Anyway after a lovely break from the sewing room I've managed to complete some gifts that have been sitting on my desk for a very long time- some very belated welcome gifts for Lucia and Stella...

I've made an early start on the back to school products...

Yay I managed to get all my suby swim bag orders done before Christmas...

And my very favourite handmade Chritsmas gift was from the very talented Julie...

Other projects awaiting completion are my annual personalised calendars (so late this year!), 3 kids birthday parties (hence presents) this weekend, and of course pretty-fying the rest of the items on the grade 1 stationery and book list.

I'll leave you with a little blast from my past, Jhoanna's monk-chis and the ensuing discussions reminded me of him a while back. Isn't he cute!

PS don't know how long I can keep myself to this less tell pledge, so stay tuned!

Ok so for the bad news first... we didn't get the house! We were completely outbid, didn't even get a chance to get a bid in! If you missed the auction results last weekend it went for 1.121 million! Just a smidgeon over our budget (!) and almost $400,000 over the reserve! It was a great dream for a week though, and as a dear friend pointed out it was like we were in a movie for a week- completely removed from reality with our heads full of grand dreams! I'm sure the reality of living in a derelict mansion would have completely killed all those dreams after the first 6 months!

And so as fate steered us away from that crazy dream we were launched into the next rollercoaster of emotions- a cancer scare, but all ok for now we think...

Back to happy crafty news...

Did I ever told you about the singer story? The old treadly model that my grandmother brought over on a ship in early 70's?? The one that my uncle, after I said that I would take it off his hands, took to the tip???! It's always been difficult to talk about that story, but we recently struck gold at a country op shop and picked up this great old thing in perfect working order for $10! My grandmother must be looking out for me up there! And so I'm back on to my heavy duty jobs like handbags and for next year suede and leather diary covers. And so my first batch of handbags went out as Christmas presents for the kinder and school teachers.

Still working on last minute swimming bag and handbag orders before Christmas, but also trying to madly finish off more my own gift list. I haven't officially taken the handmade pledge, but it's something that I definitely do anyway.

christmas confessions

OK confession number one... I'm one of those terrible mothers who loves to dress their girls in the same outfits, worse still in the same homemade outfits... eeek!

I have wonderfully horrid memories of my own mother doing the same thing to my sister and I... (me second from right, little sister third from left) and I'm not going anywhere near the photos of the matching brown jumpsuits...

confession number 2... it is not the first year I have done it to them...

or even the second...

ahhhh... it's my DREAM house... and it's up for auction this saturday! If by some small miracle we're successful then it might be goodbye small time sewing business, hello full time proper work...!

It's been a while since my last post- as well as working away on my swimming bag orders I've also started my new job (as a paeds physio in early intervention) which, along with maintaining my community health paeds job, has proven quite draining. BUT along to my rescue came Emm's Japanese clothes book which we spied on Jhoanna's blog (one red robin) and, along with Corrie's special on her cosmo novelty fabrics (retro mummy) has kept me buoyant with busy workings on...

...and I've finally made a start on christmas presents (close your eyes Broes!)

I've also just ordered 2 more Japanese clothes books (for myself this time!) so looking forward to doing a bit of sewing for myself after my next batch of swimming bags. I've also been outed as a "lurker" (slowly learning the lingo- I'm either a lurking peep or peeping lurker!) on some very talented crafty craftsters out there... lots of fun, check out Posie's competition for a bit of fun!

We've also got Jaz's big ballet concert this week, we'll post her pics on her blog later this week!

fete debriefing

What a wonderful day we had at the annual Brunswick Kindergarten fete! Once again we dodged the threat of October showers, and there was plenty of action for all the kids and parents. There was fierce competition in the silent auction stalls, and our lovely handmade by BK mums goodies walked out the door! The linen tea towels (gorgeously embroidered by Mel), Julie's stuffed dolls, the aprons and recycled cricket ball bracelets seemed to be the most popular items, or at least they were my favourites!

And so even with the sad sad news of our beloved Karen's resignation hanging over our heads, a wonderful time was had by all. This is Karen's 10th and final year as Brunswick Kinder's teacher and director. It's widely known across Moreland that she is the heart and soul of Brunswick Kinder, and I don't think I'll be alone in shedding some tears at the end of the year...

And back to a lighter note... subydesigns has taken off! I've been inundated with orders for personalised swimming bags, and with Christmas orders coming through quickly suffice to say that I'll be kept busy! I'll be at the Moonee Valley children's festival on Sunday 28th of October (Queen's Park, Moonee Ponds; I'll actually be there in a physio capacity but I'll have some leftover fete gear) so maybe I'll see you there!

welcome to suby!

Hello blogging world! In response to overwhelming enquiries I've finally managed to figure out how to blog, so here's all my stuff! I'll eventually display all the goodies that I've made, all of which are available to purchase.

My initial line of library bags and handbags came out of the Brunswick Kinder craft stall that I've helped Mel to co-ordinate. It's been a fun 6 week lead up to the fete (held next week on 13th October!) where a group of kinder mums have been meeting up at Julie's every Thursday night to very diligently create a range of bags and aprons in our "BK mums" sweatshop. Julie also made some gorgeous babushka dolls and little stuffed toys (most of which have already sold) and Mel has embellished a range of linen tea towels, so we're very excited to see how the kinder community responds next weekend.

And so the creation of suby as a label has been born mostly out of the enthusiasm of everyone that I've shown my stuff to. Thanks to Laurice and the baggage needs of her 5 girls I've created the lined swimming bags and ballet shoe bags, all of which can be personalised with children's names. With school swimming season coming up in term 4 we'll get to check out all the preppies at Moonee Ponds Central with their suby swimming bags!

A very big thankyou goes out to Jennie (aka Posie) whom I met in Darwin back in June. She has inspired me with the confidence to develop my range into a marketable product, as well as provide us with her range of fabulous vintage fabrics.

And so with the countdown on till our kinder fete it's action stations for BK mums. I'm now taking orders for my personalised suby range, so if you see something you like please contact me to place an order. Otherwise come along to Brunswick Kinder next Saturday, but get there early coz we're thinking we'll sell out early! If you like the kinder range (without names) Mel and I are planning to do the Our Ladie's school fete in East Brunswick in November, so look out for us there!
